As the Jets roster is currently constructed, it is rather obvious that Geno is currently the first team quarterback.

The bigger question is what will happen if the Jets select a quarterback in the first round (or even early second round) of the NFL Draft. That prospect will likely be ordained as the new “quarterback of the future.”

Of course coaches frequently change their minds as events dictate. Glenn’s comments do seem to suggest, however, that Smith will likely be in the starting lineup no matter what happens in a few weeks.

For the Jets, I’m inclined to think this is the way to go. One mistake this franchise has made over and over was throwing quarterbacks onto the field immediately. In many cases the quarterbacks did not seem ready to play, and perhaps it hurt their development.
