The Alabama House of Representatives on Wednesday approved a bill intended to stop people from buying candy and sodas with benefits from the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program.
SB57, by Sen. Arthur Orr, R-Decatur, would require the Alabama Department of Human Resources, which administers SNAP, to request a waiver from the federal government to remove candy and sodas from the list of foods eligible for purchase with SNAP cards.
