A bill intended to stop people from buying candy and sodas with benefits from the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program is currently awaiting signature from Alabama Gov. Kay Ivey after being passed by the House and Senate this week.
SB57, by Sen. Arthur Orr, R-Decatur, would require the Alabama Department of Human Resources, which administers SNAP, to request a waiver from the federal government to remove candy and sodas from the list of foods eligible for purchase with SNAP cards.
