Alabama universities brace for tenure, curriculum changes after bill’s passage

University boards of trustees will have more control over faculty senates, tenure and curriculum after the Alabama Senate passed HB 580, faculty representatives and others say.

Sponsored by Rep. Troy Stubbs, (R-Elmore County), the bill passed 27-7 and will limit the power of faculty senate groups and create a review process for tenured faculty. Once signed, the legislation goes into effect Oct. 1.
