In a culture where dating often begins with a swipe and physical attraction can overshadow compatibility, author and entrepreneur Sade Awe is challenging young men to consider a question that could shape the rest of their lives: Are you choosing someone based on chemistry or character?
Her debut book, Character Over Chemistry: A Discernment Guide for Young Men, released Sept. 15 through Palmetto Publishing, explores the importance of discernment, emotional awareness and intentional decision-making in relationships. But for Awe, the message extends well beyond dating. It’s about preparing the next generation of men to recognize healthy relationships, protect their purpose and make choices that support their futures.
“Young men are taught how to pursue success, but not always how to discern the character of the people they allow close to them,” Awe said. “They are prepared for careers, competition and achievement, yet some of their most consequential decisions happen in their personal lives. I wrote this book because who they choose matters.”
An Elevated Evening With a Deeper Purpose
Ahead of the book’s release, Awe hosted an intimate gathering at the ultra-exclusive Cowboys Club at The Star in Frisco, Texas, bringing together an influential group of guests for a thought-provoking conversation about character, relationships and the responsibility of guiding young men into adulthood.
I had the pleasure of attending the beautifully curated experience, where sophisticated hospitality met genuine dialogue. From the elegant atmosphere to the intentional guest list, the evening reflected Awe’s signature attention to detail. Yet what stood out most was the authenticity of the conversations and the shared commitment to preparing the next generation for healthier relationships and more intentional lives.
During our conversation following the event, Awe explained that her goal was never simply to host an impressive book celebration. She wanted to create an environment where people with influence, particularly those who mentor and work with young men, could exchange perspectives and carry the message into their communities.
“I want this to become a broader dialogue … about character, discernment, and the choices that are shaping our young men,” she shared. For Awe, the gathering represented the beginning of a larger movement rooted in awareness, accountability and open conversations between generations.
Why Character Matters More Than Chemistry
Written from a mother’s perspective, Character Over Chemistry encourages readers to look beyond physical attraction and examine qualities such as consistency, integrity, accountability and shared values. Through recognizable relationship archetypes and behavioral patterns, the book offers young men a framework for recognizing unhealthy dynamics before emotional investment clouds their judgment.
Awe, who is raising a son and daughter, said the inspiration came from maternal concern, personal observations and her relationships with young men she considers her “bonus sons.” She also reflected on her own experiences navigating relationships during college, recalling how romantic distractions affected her focus and reinforced the importance of making thoughtful personal choices.
“Attraction will only get you so far,” she explained during our interview. “Character is going to determine what that relationship can be.” Her message isn’t intended to criticize women or discourage romantic relationships. Instead, Awe wants readers to understand that genuine connection should never require sacrificing personal values, identity, peace or purpose.
From Corporate Leadership to Purpose-Driven Authorship
Beyond her literary debut, Awe brings more than 17 years of global experience in IT enterprise resource planning implementation, supporting Fortune 500 initiatives and business transformation efforts. She is also the founder of EAZY GYFT, an international luxury gifting and curated-experience company, and The Inner Circle Experience, a luxury retreat platform centered on intentional connections, meaningful conversations and elevated hospitality.
While her professional background demonstrates an aptitude for business and entrepreneurship, motherhood remains central to her personal mission. Awe believes conversations about relationships, emotional awareness and character should begin at home, long before young adults encounter the pressures of dating, independence and major life decisions. As she explained during our interview, she would rather equip her children with guidance and a foundation for making mistakes than leave those lessons entirely to the outside world.
Building a Movement Beyond the Book
Although achieving bestseller status would be a welcome milestone, Awe hopes the book’s greatest success will be measured by its impact. Her vision includes bringing Character Over Chemistry to college campuses, athletic departments, student-athlete development programs and organizations that support young men during pivotal stages of their lives.
She also wants to engage parents, coaches, educators and community leaders in conversations that extend beyond romance into friendships, leadership and professional relationships. “I want the conversation to extend beyond dating and to really talk more about how character affects relationships, how it affects leadership, your purpose, and how you make decisions,” she said.
At a time when conversations about dating culture, emotional availability and relationship expectations continue to evolve, Awe offers a perspective rooted in accountability, intentionality and healthy connections. Her book is less about telling young men whom to love and more about helping them recognize what deserves their trust, energy and commitment.
If the heartfelt conversations at the Cowboys Club gathering were any indication, her message is already finding an audience. What began as a mother’s desire to equip her children with wisdom has the potential to spark a broader cultural dialogue about the choices that shape not only relationships, but entire lives.
