For The Hype Magazine, stories of innovation often begin with more than a product. They begin with purpose, lived experience, and the decision to challenge what an industry has accepted for too long. That is exactly the case with AWARE Hair, the scalp-first professional haircare brand co-founded by Tina Mui, a longtime stylist and trichologist, and her daughter Jade.
AWARE Hair was born at the intersection of professional reckoning and deeply personal need. After spending decades behind the chair, Tina, a Trichologist, Master Stylist, and Co-Founder of AWARE Hair, began questioning traditional salon formulas following the loss of two close colleagues to cancers she connects to prolonged chemical exposure in the beauty industry. At the same time, Jade was facing her own painful journey with scalp irritation and hair loss. Those two realities pushed Tina to rethink what high-performance haircare could look like if scalp health, cleaner ingredients, and professional results were treated as a single mission rather than competing priorities.
The result is AWARE Hair’s 9·1 Professional collection, a streamlined system built around proactive scalp care. Rather than waiting for symptoms like shedding, itchiness, buildup, or irritation to appear, the brand approaches the scalp much like skincare: nourish it, protect it, rebalance it, and support the environment where healthy hair begins.

In this exclusive conversation, Tina opens up about the emotional moments that shaped AWARE Hair, the occupational realities many stylists face, the science behind ingredients like dual-weight hyaluronic acid and Tahitian microalgae, and why she believes proactive scalp wellness should become the new standard across the haircare industry.
For Tina, AWARE Hair is not just another beauty brand. It is a legacy project, a mother-daughter mission, and a call for the professional haircare world to move toward formulas that are effective, thoughtful, and healthier for both clients and stylists.
“Healthy hair begins with a healthy scalp, but for AWARE Hair, that philosophy is also personal.”
Read the full conversation below as Tina discusses the personal and professional experiences that inspired AWARE Hair, the future of scalp wellness, and why clean professional performance should never come at the cost of stylist or client well-being.
AWARE Hair was born from both personal and professional experiences, specifically your professional loss of two close colleagues to cancers linked to prolonged chemical exposure. How did this critical, tragic realization drive you to actively “rethink traditional salon formulas” when creating your own brand?
I started doing hair in the ’80s, in the era of perms and bleach. Back then, we didn’t think too deeply about ingredients. We simply used what worked.
In many ways, it reminds me of ultra-processed food. The faster, easier, and more dramatically a product could beautify hair, the more we considered it “good.” Over time, product performance improved, but in our industry, the standards didn’t really change.
In the early 2000s, keratin treatments entered the scene and immediately made a huge splash. Clients loved them, stylists were able to charge a premium for them, and in the short term, no one seemed to have issues. But I remember even in those early days, when you heated the product, the fumes that would come out. That was a big reason I never personally made keratin treatments a major part of my service.
It was only after two close colleagues of mine passed away in the last decade after battling uterine cancer, which has been linked to these types of chemical exposures, that I was personally so affected. It could easily have been me.
I started learning more about product science and studying the literature. A study published through the National Institutes of Health found that 1 in 5 hairdressers experience a chronic or terminal illness related to our occupational hazards. I myself experienced a miscarriage and now have severe arthritis in my hands, both of which I believe may be connected to a lifetime in the salon, soaking my hands daily in harsh chemicals from our products.
I’m an old-school hairdresser. When I first started, we didn’t have an option between performance and health, but today we do. The more I investigated and spoke with cosmetic chemists, the more I learned about the latest innovations in clean hair and scalp science that could still deliver salon-quality results without the tradeoffs.
That became the basis of AWARE: quality, natural-first formulas packed with clinically proven bioactives that still deliver professional-level performance.
As a stylist and trichologist, how did the personal experience of your daughter, Jade, navigating her own scalp issues and hair loss, directly inform the functional focus and specific formulation of the initial three AWARE Hair SKUs?
As a mother, you remember certain moments in your life with your children very clearly. I still remember the morning when Jade called me sobbing about how much she had been struggling with hair loss. She was living thousands of miles away from me at the time in Dubai, and it broke my heart that despite dedicating my life to taking care of hair and scalp, my own daughter was suffering from these same issues.
I immediately gave her a full treatment protocol, recommending the shampoos, serums, and routines I used in my own practice. But Jade’s symptoms were severe, and they were at the stage where I would normally recommend that my clients see a doctor or dermatologist.
But when it’s your own daughter, you don’t give up.
I called every expert I knew and requested papers on the latest innovations in hair and scalp science. I studied all the clean, natural, and clinical haircare brands I could find and tested them myself, trying to understand which surfactant systems could cleanse deeply without stripping, and which conditioning agents could hydrate without relying on heavy silicones.
After several lab iterations and weeks of testing the products on myself and a few clients, I finally had a first version. I waited anxiously for weeks for Jade to come home for Christmas. When she told me that first week how good her scalp finally felt with AWARE, and how the irritation that had bothered her for months had finally gone away, I knew I was onto something. Then after a few months, it definitely wasn’t overnight, her hair starting growing back.
My next goal was to help the dozens of my own clients who suffered from the same issues. I experimented in the salon for years, iterating until the products performed at the level we needed professionally: safe and effective for color, extensions, and salon treatments.
The products started with Jade, but they became a proactive scalp system for everyone.
What is proactive scalp care, and how do your products differ from existing scalp care products on the market?
Most scalp care products that exist today are reactive. They are shampoos and serums that address specific symptoms like thinning or dandruff, often with approved drugs that target fungus or force the hair to grow. The problem is that they’re not always addressing the underlying cause.
Think of most scalp care products the way you would think about medication. Cold medicine can reduce a fever, but it doesn’t necessarily help you fix the source of your sickness.
The scalp works the same way.
Many common hair and scalp issues are caused by disruptions to the scalp barrier and microbiome, whether from product buildup, ingredient exposure, hormones, stress, or environmental damage like heat and UV.
At AWARE, we help address these broader scalp health disruptions through a root-cause approach. Our 4R scalp health system works as a foundational philosophy, even if you choose to use other products: reset the scalp barrier through deep cleansing, repair the microbiome, reinforce the scalp against environmental stress, and reactivate circulation.
When we say AWARE is proactive, it’s not because it can’t support you if you’re already experiencing symptoms. It’s because our products are designed to help improve the scalp environment before those issues escalate – very much like skincare, oral care, or gut health. You don’t wait until your teeth are falling out to brush them. You don’t wait until your skin is wrinkled to wear sunscreen. So why do we wait until our hair is shedding to care for the scalp it grows from? As we all know with healthy living, the best time to start is before you absolutely need it.
Your hero products, like the 9·1 Professional Scalp Care Shampoo, are concentrated with specialty-sourced ingredients, including low and high molecular weight hyaluronic acid and Tahitian microalgae. What performance gaps were you aiming to fill by prioritizing these particular ingredients in scalp care?
Our goal from day one was to help restore and support the natural barrier and microbiome of the scalp, which I believe are central to many common hair and scalp issues.
Hyaluronic acid is one of the most studied and proven ingredients in modern skincare, yet it is surprisingly rare in haircare. As I discovered, part of the reason has to do with the type of hyaluronic acid commonly available on the market.
Most hyaluronic acid has a higher molecular weight, which works beautifully when applied and left on the face as a moisturizer, but has more difficulty reaching the scalp quickly in a rinse-out product. By integrating a dual-weight hyaluronic acid system designed specifically for the hair and scalp, the higher weights help add softness and shine to the hair, while the lower weights are able to quickly hydrate beneath the scalp barrier.
Our biofermented microalgae stood out to me for its ability to deliver essential nutrients like fatty acids, peptides, and antioxidants to the scalp and help balance its delicate microbiome. It has also shown strong clinical promise in supporting the hair growth cycle by helping extend the anagen growth phase, strengthening the hair root and follicle, and reducing premature shedding.
I want to be clear, however, that our microalgae is not a hair growth drug. I think of it more like a superfood or probiotic for the scalp. It helps give your own scalp microbiome and environment the best possible conditions to support natural, healthy hair.
The brand launched in August 2025 and, within a short time, completely sold out of 7,500 units of the 9·1 Professional Scalp Care Shampoo, quickly building a waitlist ahead of the restock. What do you attribute this immediate, major market demand to?
Before our launch, AWARE had been in development for over five years. Jade, myself, and hundreds of my clients had tested the products, and we iterated through more than 100 versions before reaching the final formulas.
By the time we launched, we had already established partnerships with dozens of salons across Los Angeles, and we knew from experience that the products truly worked. As I always say, marketing can get you the first buy, but if you want the re-buy, your clients have to love the product.
That’s what we had with AWARE.
For nine out of 10 clients, once they try it, they can’t go back to their old products. I hear it all the time: “I was traveling and didn’t bring my AWARE, and my scalp doesn’t feel as clean. My hair didn’t have the same shine.”
Word of mouth drove the immediate market demand, from our stylist partners down to individual clients. One client who had suffered from a decades-long scalp itch that even her dermatologist couldn’t solve felt that AWARE finally helped resolve it. Since then, she has referred over 50 friends and family members to our products, who continually refer others. It’s very much a ripple effect.
We haven’t yet paid for any ads or influencers. If people didn’t genuinely love our products, they wouldn’t support us this way, and we wouldn’t have seen the success we’ve had so far.
The products are designed to provide “exceptional hydration, protection, and nourishment.” In your expert opinion as a trichologist, how crucial is a proper scalp-care routine to overall hair health and successful styling?
I always tell my clients to think of their scalp like a garden. When you see a strong plant growing in your garden, you know it didn’t come from nowhere. The soil has nutrients, the roots have hydration, and the plant is being protected from harsh environmental conditions.
The same is true for your hair.
Every individual hair follicle lives and grows from a scalp environment, not unlike a garden. Blood vessels feed nutrients to the hair follicle, and the microbiome helps protect and defend against oxidative and environmental stress.
Taking care of your scalp with ingredients that restore moisture and nutrients through the scalp barrier is like giving rich soil and fertilizer to a plant. Your hair may still be able to grow without it, but if you want it to reach its full potential, you need to take care of the roots.
Scalp health becomes even more important when we talk about styling. In general, most styling introduces some level of stress to the hair and scalp. Gels, mousses, and hairsprays can coat the scalp and create buildup or irritation. Heat tools can damage the outer sheaths of the hair, leaving strands brittle and less resistant to stress. Even certain styles like tight ponytails or slick-backs can cause traction and friction-related stress at the roots, pulling on the follicles over time.
Scalp health is about more than just the products we use. It’s also about how much stress we introduce to the hair, and how much we can do to help mitigate that damage. Just as exercise and proper nutrition can make the body more resilient to physical stress, a proper scalp care routine can help make the scalp more durable and resistant to product and environmental stress.
Beyond the initial three products—Shampoo, Conditioner, and Leave-In Styling Conditioner—what guides your strategy for building a cohesive product line for AWARE Hair, and what problems are you looking to solve next?
As a stylist and trichologist for over 40 years, I’ve always believed that professionals like myself are the best source of hair and scalp information. We are on the ground every day, working with clients and looking at their scalps daily. If your stylist recommends a product, you can trust that they probably have a good reason to do so.
With AWARE, we wanted to make it simple for clients to have everything they need to care for their scalp and hair in a routine that already feels familiar. We don’t put out anything that feels unnecessary for scalp care, or anything that isn’t better than what is already on the market.
We also make sure every product is loved by professionals first, because if they love it, there’s a real chance their clients will too. Everything we create is based on the real needs I see in my clients.
A lot of people ask me why we didn’t launch with a scalp serum, and the truth is that not everyone needs a scalp serum. In my 40 years behind the chair, I’ve learned that the best results come from consistency, not complexity. Creating a simple routine clients can actually stick to is essential.
That said, we are currently working on two products: a pre-wash hair oil that integrates beautifully with our scalp gua sha service, and a treatment that offers additional scalp nourishment for those who need more intensive care. The goal is to give clients the tools they need to elevate scalp care into a full scalp ritual.
Eventually, we would also like to address the complex issue of styling products, particularly hairsprays. As a hairdresser, I’ve tried for years to find a natural hairspray that doesn’t rely on aerosols or other airborne toxins. Unfortunately, while the technology has improved with continuous-mist sprays and bag-on-valve systems, we still haven’t found a natural alternative to aerosol that can truly match the performance.
It’s a category we’ll continue innovating in, and I truly believe that if there is a company that can eventually create that solution, it will be AWARE.
The mission is deeply rooted in moving away from chemicals linked to health risks. How challenging is it to innovate high-performance, color-safe, and pH-balanced formulas that meet professional standards while maintaining a commitment to cleaner ingredients?
Extremely difficult, but also less impossible than people might think. Like most things in life, it comes down to how much you are willing to put in.
When we come home from a long day at work, we can go through the fast-food drive-through, or we can buy nutritious whole foods and cook a meal from scratch. One option is cheaper and easier in the short term. The other is better for you in the long run.
AWARE is a company built by looking at the long run.
I’m in my sixties now. I’ve had a great life, a full career, and two beautiful children. My highest dream and priority is not grand riches or fame. It is building a product and company that I can be truly proud of. This is the legacy I want to leave behind.
That’s why AWARE took over five years to create. Every single time there was a cheap or easy option that most people would never notice, we said no.
We spent 25 times more on a fine natural fragrance that smells beautiful instead of choosing a synthetic equivalent, because we wanted to avoid unnecessary inhalation of potentially harmful chemicals. We chose smaller ingredient suppliers and vetted them ourselves, because mass-market versions can contain potentially harmful contaminants that companies do not always need to disclose on the label.
Every step of the way, we chose the harder and more expensive route because it allowed us to feel confident and proud of what we share with the world.
As a founder launching a new brand, what was the most unexpected challenge you faced in bringing AWARE Hair to market, and how did you navigate the rapid scale-up after the hero shampoo sold out?
Everything feels straightforward when you’re starting out, but scaling with quality is something that will challenge even the biggest brands.
When I first started working on AWARE, I was making it for my daughter Jade. I wasn’t concerned with ingredient supply times, MOQs, or lab capacity. I just wanted to make the best possible formulas I could.
When we started to seriously consider launching AWARE as a brand, we immediately ran into the same challenges most first-time product founders face. Certain materials have high MOQs. Our lab has a long lead queue every time we move from purchase order to production. And when salons need a product, they need it shipped right away, or they may not be able to use it in service.
Making a great product is one thing. Making sure every bottle of AWARE is the exact same quality as the final version we tested in my salon is an entirely different ball game.
As we grow, we remain committed to the principles we’ve had since the beginning: small-batch production, thorough testing of every batch, and at least two weeks of use in my own bathroom and salon before anything goes to a client or salon partner.
Every time we sell out, it’s a reminder that we are protecting the standards we set for ourselves from the beginning.
What is the core message you hope to convey to other professionals—whether stylists, trichologists, or entrepreneurs—who want to move toward healthier, more conscientious product development?
Understand your why.
Are you doing it because of market trends, or are you doing it because of a deep-rooted conviction and passion?
Product development is a long and difficult process, especially as an individual without vast financial resources or highly specialized expertise. Along the way, you will face countless questions and challenges, and it is very easy to turn a blind eye and accept tradeoffs.
The number one thing I always tell new entrepreneurs looking to innovate is to be aware of your own strengths and weaknesses. You have superpowers, and you also have your own kryptonite.
A product is not enough to build a successful company, and choosing to innovate with more conscientious product development will expose you to challenges in other areas. A brilliant chemist might know everything about ingredients, but do they understand the supply chain, unit economics, and go-to-market strategy needed to sell that product? A trichologist and stylist like myself understands what to look for in performance and results, but I needed experts, dermatologists, and hair restoration specialists to help guide the ingredient choices we made.
I truly believe most people want to make better, healthier products. But to do so in a way that you can share with the world and commercialize successfully takes a strong team. So don’t try to do everything yourself. Find the right people who can help make it happen.
Looking ahead, what is the ultimate vision for AWARE Hair, and how do you plan to leverage the initial success of the brand to drive a larger movement in the haircare industry?
Our ultimate goal for AWARE is to make proactive scalp wellness the default standard in the industry.
For far too long, the scalp has been an afterthought, a part of our bodies we rarely see or think about until symptoms appear. We complain about shedding, itchiness, dandruff, and irritation, and then we buy medications or drugs to tackle the symptom instead of healing the root cause underneath.
I compare it to the progress we’ve made in skincare over the last two decades. When I was starting out, you might put on moisturizer once a week, and sunscreen was only for the beach. By the time wrinkles started showing, people would spend a fortune on special creams and facelifts, but they could never fully reverse the damage.
Scalp care is the same. The more you can do today to hydrate, nourish, and prevent damage, the more you can help avoid issues 20 years down the line.
With AWARE, we have finally built products that proactively care for the scalp while maintaining and enhancing the beauty of the hair. We have eliminated the tradeoffs of the past with new ingredients and technology that can be both high-performing and better for you.
We are setting a new standard in this industry, and our ultimate goal is for consumers to notice and demand the same from every other product they use.
