The Birmingham City Schools Board of Education today approved a $544.97 million Fiscal Year 2027 budget, an increase of $63.67 million over the FY2026 budget of $481.3 million. The budget prioritized student achievement, employee support, school safety, career readiness and investments in future-ready schools and facilities.
Superintendent Dr. Mark Sullivan“This budget represented an important investment in the future of Birmingham City Schools and, most importantly, the future of our scholars,” said Superintendent Dr. Mark Sullivan. “We were intentional about directing resources toward teaching and learning, supporting our employees, strengthening our schools and creating opportunities that prepared our students for college, careers and life.”
The budget continued a $1,000, one-time prospective pay program for full-time employees; two locally funded personal leave days; a $3,500 stipend for special education teachers; and sign-on bonuses for critical, hard-to-fill positions.
The budget also included $30 million toward the Future Ready Career & Innovation Center, as part of a projected $70 million project that included a $40 million commitment from the City of Birmingham. Overall, the district budgeted $77.8 million for capital projects, including $45.9 million in new projects. Additional investments included $800,000 for summer and after-school programs, and $594,000 in state funding for school safety and security cameras.
“Our responsibility was not simply to fund another school year,” Sullivan said. “It was to make strategic investments that had a lasting impact on our scholars, our employees and our community.”
