Birmingham leads Alabama in population loss as far-flung suburbs boom

No city in Alabama lost more people in 2025 than Birmingham.

The city, once the largest in the state, has been steadily losing population for decades. It lost 900 more people last year, bringing its population down to just under 196,000.
