CHICAGO — The Chicago Sky’s home opener ended in disappointment as the team fell to the Dallas Wings 99-89 at Wintrust Arena. Despite a franchise-record performance from Kamilla Cardoso and a resilient late-game push, the Dallas Wings (3-2) had complete control during the second half, spoiling the Sky’s first home game of the 2026 season. For more postgame reactions, player takeaways, and my full breakdown from inside Wintrus t Arena, watch the full recap only on The Hype Magazine.
The Dallas Wings brought a historic offensive onslaught to Wintrust Arena on Wednesday night, hosting a master class in capitalizing of offensive fouls and stretching the lead. While Chicago fans hoped to see the Sky build on their strong road victories, they instead watched Jessica Shepard deliver a historic performance.

Kamil Krzaczynski-Imagn ImagesJessica Shepard was the engine behind the Wings’ offensive onslaught, recording the 50th triple-double in WNBA history with 18 points, 10 rebounds, and a game-high 12 assists. She attacked the Sky’s defense with surgical precision, becoming the only player in league history to record two career triple-doubles while shooting over 85% from the field.
In the post game press conference, Head Coach Tyler Marsh regretfully remarked on the team loss.
“It wasn’t good enough. It wasn’t the standard that we’ve set, and they made us pay. They made us pay for every mistake we made defensively, so we got to be better.”
Her playmaking took over in the third quarter as Dallas put up 34 points, personally delivering 13 buckets in the quarter. Shepard was in full control of the tempo, spacing, and timing, forcing Chicago into constant rotations and making them pay for every breakdown. Working out of the pick-and-roll, she stayed patient and efficient, helping Dallas take full control of the game on the road.
While commenting on Shepard’s performance, Marsh gave a fair analysis.
“We knew that was part of her game, and I think it’s an underrated part of her game… That’s what she’s capable of doing. I think they got a good rhythm in that second half. Some tough shots they made, some were more open than we would have liked them to be, but she was great on both ends today.”
Dallas Wings guard Paige Bueckers (5) drives to the basket against Chicago Sky guard Natasha Cloud. Kamil Krzaczynski-Imagn ImagesWith Shepard pulled the strings, Paige Bueckers provided the finishing touch. The second-year guard led the way with 24 points and four assists, repeatedly getting downhill and penetrating Chicago’s perimeter.
Her strongest stretch came in the fourth quarter, where she helped Dallas finally pull away after multiple ties and late pushes from the Sky. Bueckers accounted for 14 of the Wings’ 28 points in the final frame, scoring eight herself while setting up six more through her playmaking. In “closing time,” she stayed aggressive and composed, sealing Chicago’s chances at a comeback and helping the Wings (3-2) secure the hard-fought win.

Krzaczynski-Imagn ImagesThe 24-point, 11-rebound night from Chicago’s Kamilla Cardoso simply could not contain the Wings’ offensive movement. The 99 point loss marked a sharp step back from the defensive identity Chicago built during its early road stretch.
When asked about her increased role as a facilitator, Cardoso credited her preparation.
“We’ve been working on this every time after practice,” Cardoso said. “I know I’m a great passer, so I’ve just got to stay calm, watch the floor, and see where the double [team] is coming from and find the open player.”
Joining Cardoso in the scoring surge was veteran guard Natasha Cloud, who delivered her most complete performance with 21 points and 5 assists. Rookie Gabriela Jaquez also continued her hot streak, contributing 12 points and drawing praise from Coach Marsh for her fearlessness.
Beyond the box score, the Sky are navigating a difficult emotional stretch following the loss of rookie star Rickea Jackson to a season-ending ACL injury. Several players wore Jackson’s jersey pre-game to show support. Veteran guard Skylar Diggins, who returned to the lineup with 15 points, was candid about the team’s defensive identity.
“We were a little bit more undisciplined than we usually are defensively,” said Sky guard Skylar Diggins who scored 15 points in her return. “It was uncharacteristic for us… you’re not going to win a game when you give up 34 and 28 points in the third and fourth quarters.”
Diggins noted that the team is still adjusting to the loss of such a high-level talent.
“We lost one of the best players in the league. There are a lot of residuals that come off of that,” she said. “We’ve just got to get into the swing of things, but I’m not tripping—I still love our squad.”
Up Next: A Saturday Showdown
The Sky (3-2) won’t have long to dwell on the loss. They remain at Wintrust Arena to host the Minnesota Lynx on Saturday, May 23. Chicago previously defeated Minnesota earlier this season behind a career-high 20 points from Gabriela Jaquez.
“Tonight showed us early on what we’re capable of,” Marsh concluded. “We have a lot left to show and improve upon.”
Tip-off is scheduled for 12 p.m. CT and will be broadcast locally on The U.
