Amsterdam Duo Delivers New Single, Live Energy, and The Power of Joyful Escape

Amsterdam indie-pop duo Ciao Lucifer is taking its bright, kinetic sound to UK audiences with the release of its new single, “Kissing in the Rain,” and a run of May live dates that includes Focus Wales and The Great Escape. Known for building its identity as a live band first, the duo is using this moment to introduce new listeners to a performance style that moves with the fluidity of a DJ set while retaining the human pulse of a two-piece band.

Released April 9, “Kissing in the Rain” arrives as a fitting entry point. The song is immediate, melodic and full of movement, but its lift comes from something more personal than surface-level cheer. In the band’s view, joy can serve as an escape, even if only for a moment. That idea sits at the center of the single and much of Ciao Lucifer’s creative DNA. We covered the release and their movement is so strong we had to get the duo to weigh in on a few things below!

In response to the question about what personal experience helped inspire the track, the band pointed to the delicate moment before connection becomes something more.

“I love the twilight zone right before a personal connection turns romantic. It’s such a powerful yet vulnerable moment that I almost don’t want it to stop. Kissing in the Rain is about some of those moments, combined in a dreamy mashup. It’s happened more than once that I’ve lingered in a moment like that for so long that I missed a train, bus or boat. Oh well…”

That balance of vulnerability, playfulness and motion gives the single its emotional charge. “Kissing in the Rain” feels built for the stage, but it also carries the intimacy of a memory that is still glowing around the edges.

A Live Band First

Ciao Lucifer’s reputation has grown around the energy of its live performances. The duo has spent years refining a continuous, high-impact set across European clubs and festivals, often moving from song to song with the momentum of a DJ set rather than the stop-and-start rhythm of a traditional band show.

That live-first mindset shaped the recording process for the upcoming album.

“We made a radical decision: the entire upcoming album was recorded in just three days. About 90% of what you hear was recorded in a single take, including lead vocals, guitar, drums and bass. That was quite a hard thing to do with just the two of us. Marnix plays a custom built 10-string guitar called Maradonna to play bass and guitar at the same time.”

The result is a recorded sound that still feels physically connected to performance. Instead of smoothing every edge into studio perfection, Ciao Lucifer leaned into immediacy. The recording captures musicians moving in real time, responding to the urgency that has made their live show such a central part of their story.

Bridging Indie Pop And Dance Culture

Part of what separates Ciao Lucifer from many indie-pop acts is the philosophy behind the band’s stagecraft. Their shows are designed to move, not merely to be observed. The band sees a creative opening between indie music’s more cerebral tendencies and the body-first power of dance music.

“We wanted to bridge the gap between an increasingly intellectual indie scene and the highly physical EDM world. Seeing a band shouldn’t have to be a studious exercise and dance music doesn’t have to be strictly formulaïc.”

That approach also comes with a commitment to performance without artificial scaffolding.

“We don’t play with a backing track or metronome and our audience tells us this makes us very easy to connect with, both a physical and an emotional level. What you see is what you get.”

For audiences, that means each show has room to breathe. The grooves are organic. The transitions are intentional. The energy is shaped in the moment rather than locked to a grid.

Feel-Good Music With A Human Center

Ciao Lucifer’s music often feels bright on first listen, but beneath the upbeat arrangements are songs about uncertainty, heartbreak, relationships and everyday contradictions. The band does not appear to treat that contrast as a formula. Instead, it sounds like a natural byproduct of why the project began.

“It’s honestly not a very conscious balance. We started this band because Marnix had a broken heart. We met up and talked about it for about 15 minutes before grabbing some instruments. The stuff that came out made the sun shine again.”

That quote explains much of the band’s appeal. Ciao Lucifer does not make escapist music by ignoring difficulty. The duo builds its escape through movement, melody and connection.

On what they hope UK festival audiences will take away from seeing the show for the first time, the answer was direct.

“We’d like to help them forget their troubles. In violent times such as these, music can connect us and provide an escape from nihilism.”

That sentiment gives “Kissing in the Rain” added weight. The song is not just a bright single. It is part of a broader mission to make joy feel active, communal and necessary.

Inside The Songwriting Process

A surprisingly exploratory writing process backs the band’s instinctive melodie,s. Ciao Lucifer describes itself as a pair of songwriting nerds, willing to experiment with methods, references and unusual creative prompts.

“We are songwriting nerds and love trying different writing methods. In the past we’ve written over the phone, made lyrics from the Tao Te Ching, used a water bottle as our main instrument, and so forth.”

For “Kissing in the Rain,” the musical influences reached across centuries and genres.

“‘Kissing in the Rain’ was written while Marnix was doing a Bach project and listening to a lot of D’Angelo and Funcadelic. The song started with a sort of Funk riff but in the verses there’s a descending bassline while the vocal melody ascends, which is typical Bach. We don’t think anyone who hears Kissing in the Rain will think: ‘that sounds like Bach’, but we love that, when an inspiration becomes unrecognizable.”

That ability to absorb influence without making it obvious helps define the song’s charm. It moves easily, but there is craft underneath the ease.

Ready For The UK Stage

The team’s UK run includes a mix of festival appearances and club dates, giving the duo multiple settings to introduce itself to new audiences. For some bands, that would require a rigid performance strategy. For Ciao Lucifer, the flexibility is part of the point.

“That’s the great thing about playing everything live and with just two people: we’re highly adaptable to the moment. We can change the setlist while we’re playing and speed things up or slow them down whenever we think the crowd energy would benefit from it. So it’s almost impossible to predict how the shows will go exactly, quite a bit of that happens in the moment.”

That adaptability should serve the duo well across its May appearances, from intimate rooms to festival stages.

Amsterdam Roots, Global Reach

As an Amsterdam-based duo, Ciao Lucifer has also been shaped by the Netherlands’ festival culture and its deep connection to electronic music. That environment pushed the band to sharpen its performance instincts and develop a bigger sound than one might expect from two people on stage.

“The Dutch are big on music festivals and EDM, which is why we’ve played at those dance festivals a lot. It’s a great audience to play for: they enjoy musical energy in a refreshingly non-judgemental way. But it was quite a challenge to match those DJ’s: we had to play tight and develop a big, impactful sound. As it turns out, people really like organic, human grooves. (Who would’ve thought?)”

Those organic grooves are now headed toward a new audience. The UK dates mark an important step for the band, especially because Ciao Lucifer has performed internationally but has not yet played its songs for native English-speaking audiences.

Why “Kissing In The Rain” Leads The Way

The band chose “Kissing in the Rain” as the introduction to this next chapter because it had already connected with the people closest to their live development.

“We have a very loyal group of fans for whom we organise special tryout concerts. We played them about 25 songs and they found this one very easy to connect to.”

That response made the song a natural lead-in for the UK push. It captures the band’s melodic strength, its emotional openness and its ability to turn intimate moments into communal release.

The Goal Is Perpetual Touring

Following the UK dates, Ciao Lucifer’s ambitions remain centered on the road. The duo sees live performance not only as promotion, but as the place where the band becomes sharper, freer and more connected.

“Our shows have helped us connect to people around the world: from Indonesia to Bulgaria, Denmark and Macedonia — but we’ve never played our songs for native English speakers. We hope to create a special bond with a UK audience who’ll have an unfiltered connection to all the layers of our songs.”

The band’s process does not stop when a song is released. It continues between cities, during soundchecks and across stages.

“We always fine tune songs in between concerts, while driving to the next gig or during soundchecks. In that way, we play a little better (or at least different) every night. We believe that we develop the most as a band when we play live in front of an audience, so we’re very happy that besides the UK we’re expanding to France as well. We’d like to play (almost) everywhere. Our goal is perpetual touring.”

With “Kissing in the Rain” now available and the UK dates approaching, Ciao Lucifer is stepping into a wider moment with a simple but resonant promise: bring the songs, bring the movement and give people a reason to feel lighter for a while.
