Death Dealer Union is leaning into a heavier sound with “Dark Sister,” pairing aggressive guitars and supernatural imagery with a commitment to melody. The track introduces a chapter shaped by lead vocalist Kay Bellows, whose combination of harsh and melodic delivery has opened new possibilities for the band’s songwriting.
Formed in late 2019 by drummer CC McKenna and guitarist Doug Weiand, Death Dealer Union’s current lineup also includes bassist Brice Snyder. Across its music and visuals, the group explores darkness, transformation and the tension between force and restraint.

Produced, mixed and mastered by Max Morton, “Dark Sister” places those elements together. The band describes the song as a statement of direction for its album of the same name, released through Lyra Song Records.
The accompanying video extends that atmosphere through the work of Margarita Monet, who handled its concept, art design, direction and editing. Julian Oyanedel filmed the project in Los Angeles.
In the conversation below, Death Dealer Union discusses its creative process, Bellows’ influence and the work behind its next chapter.

A Heavier Direction
What inspired your new single, “Dark Sister”?
“Dark Sister” represents the darker, heavier, and more aggressive direction we’re exploring with Death Dealer Union, and we are very happy with this new path. We wanted to create something powerful that combines crushing guitar riffs, harsh and melodic vocals/melodies. The idea was to make a song that hits heavy but still has enough melody and dynamics. It’s definitely a good representation of where we’re taking the band’s sound.
What’s the story behind the song’s lyrics?
There’s a certain duality between darkness and strength throughout the song. We also like leaving room for interpretation because music becomes more meaningful when listeners can connect the lyrics to their own experiences.
Making Space for Melody
How did you balance the heavy guitars with the song’s melodies?
That’s actually one of the most important elements of our songwriting. We love heavy guitars, but we also believe that melody is what makes a song memorable and strong.
For “Dark Sister,” we focused on creating tight, aggressive riffs while leaving enough space for the vocal melodies to breathe. Guitar arrangements, dynamics, and production all play an important role.
We love combining modern metal aggression with more traditional melodic elements. The challenge is making everything sound massive without sacrificing clarity or musicality.
Kay, what was your approach to the vocals on this track?
The approach was to bring both power and emotion to the performance. “Dark Sister” has a very intense atmosphere, so the vocals can reflect that darkness while maintaining strong melodies. The goal was to create something that feels aggressive and haunting but also memorable… Experimenting with different vocal textures and dynamics to give the song more character.
What was it like working with producer Max Morton?
Working with Max Morton has been a great experience. He’s a talented producer who understands how to make heavy music sound massive while maintaining definition and clarity. Max really helped us translate the energy of the songs into the final recordings.
Expanding the Death Dealer Union Sound
How does “Dark Sister” introduce the new album?
“Dark Sister” gives listeners a strong indication of the direction we’re taking with the new material.
The new songs are heavier, more aggressive and more dynamic, but we’re also putting a lot of emphasis on melodies, atmosphere and memorable songwriting.
We enjoy combining different influences while maintaining a recognizable Death Dealer Union identity.
“Dark Sister” is just one piece of that bigger picture.
How does the new album differ from your debut?
I think the biggest difference is the our overall sound.
With the debut album, we established the foundation of Death Dealer Union. With the new material, we’re pushing things further in terms of heaviness, technicality, arrangements and production.
The songs have more dynamics and we’re exploring different musical textures.
It’s a natural evolution, but definitely a significant step forward.
How has Kay joining the band changed your sound?
Kay brings a different energy and personality to Death Dealer Union.
Her vocal style opens up new possibilities for our songwriting, especially when it comes to combining aggressive instrumentation with strong melodic hooks.
Every singer has a unique character, and having Kay in the band allows us to explore different vocal arrangements and musical directions.
The chemistry within the band is very important, and we’re excited about what we’re creating together.
Beyond the Title Track
What songs are you most excited for fans to hear?
That’s a difficult question because we’re genuinely excited about all the new material!
“Cult of the Moonlight” and “Dark Sister” already demonstrate different aspects of our sound, and “Spellbound Machine” brings another dimension to what we’re doing…. Sacrificial Dagger and Into the Maze came out great as well … In Silence ..
I’m particularly excited for people to hear the heavier and more guitar-driven material… we had great feedback from many different listeners for all song honestly… so it’s exciting!
We put a lot of work into making every song have its own identity, so hopefully everyone will find something they connect with.
Bringing the New Material to the Stage
What else do you have planned for this year?
We’re keeping ourselves extremely busy!
Our main focus is continuing to release new music, create music videos, and bring Death Dealer Union to as many people as possible.
We’re also working on more live performances, including our upcoming show at the legendary Viper Room in Los Angeles on November 7.
Playing live is a huge part of what we love doing, and we’re looking forward to performing the new material for our fans.
Beyond that, we’re already discussing future opportunities, more local shows, tours and the next steps for the band.
There’s a lot happening behind the scenes, and we’re excited about what’s coming next. We’re extremely grateful to everyone supporting Death Dealer Union!
