Eri Ife Centers Faith on Afrobeats EP ‘Rubicon’

1 month ago 26

Nigerian singer-songwriter Eri Ife brings faith to the center of his music on Rubicon, a five-track EP that combines Afrobeats, Afro-Gospel, soul and worship. Released Aug. 7 through Iconic Stuff Entertainment, the project follows “Torun Tori” and “Aroma,” singles that helped push his catalog beyond 1 million streams, according to the release announcement.

For the U.K.-based artist, the project’s title describes a personal commitment. Drawing on the expression “crossing the Rubicon,” which signifies a decision from which there is no turning back, Eri Ife frames the EP around surrender to Christ. Its songs examine that commitment through answered prayers, uncertainty, gratitude, and the experience of finding reassurance in faith.

A Personal Journey Through Faith

Rather than approaching devotion as a single turning point, Eri Ife presents it as a continuing practice shaped by different stages of his life.

“Rubicon is about my personal journey through different stages of my life and my surrender to walk with God through it all. From a song birthed from answered academic prayers to resolving my overthinking, each song reflects a different part of that commitment, but the message remains the same. There is no turning back. ‘Rubicon’ is a testament to God meeting me at all points of life, and I hope the project helps my listeners through the same.”

That perspective connects the EP’s spiritual themes to specific experiences. Academic prayers inform one song, while another addresses anxiety through remembrance of past help. Together, the tracks trace how belief can shape a response to both uncertainty and progress.

Yoruba Influences Meet Contemporary Afrobeats

Contributors J3thro, Ife MOJ and BiodunTheSage help shape the project’s sound through contemporary Afrobeats production, Yoruba musical influences and live performance.

African percussion, horns, and melodic arrangements support songwriting centered on worship and surrender. Talking drums and live instrumentation also connect the project to Eri Ife’s family background: He comes from a family of traditional drummers, a heritage that continues to inform his approach to rhythm.

The EP brings those influences into conversation with the soul and alternative R&B elements found elsewhere in his music.

Inside the Five Tracks on ‘Rubicon’

“Aroma” opens the project with an expression of devotion built around live instrumentation, horns and talking drums. Its focus on God’s faithfulness establishes the foundation for the songs that follow.

The title track makes the EP’s central commitment explicit. Its refrain, “Ko s’ikoyin (there’s no turning back),” presents surrender as a deliberate choice to move forward in faith despite fear.

“Torun Tori” considers divine love through the experience of answered academic prayers. The song reflects on receiving help at a point of need and encountering a love that feels difficult to fully explain.

On “KSMD (Kin Sha Ma Dupe),” survival, growth, and grace become reasons for thanksgiving. Live drums and horns support a song that draws on Yoruba expression to turn gratitude into testimony.

“Ebenezer” closes the EP with remembrance. Drawing from the biblical “stone of help,” the track addresses anxiety by looking back on God’s presence and assistance, returning the project to its underlying theme of sustained belief.

From Church Choirs to ‘Rubicon’

Born Adedamola Akin-Onigbinde, Eri Ife was raised in Nigeria and began developing his voice through church choir culture. He sang during his teenage years and performed in a secondary school band before pursuing music more intentionally after school.

His early influences included Lagbaja, whose music he heard at home, and Àṣá, whose work helped shape his understanding of songwriting and emotional expression. His listening later expanded to artists including Jon Bellion and Ed Sheeran.

Known as “Esquire Wey Dey Run Choir,” Eri Ife draws those experiences together on Rubicon. The project connects his rhythmic heritage and melodic influences with an account of what faith has meant at different points in his life.
