For 52 years, a very different Vulcan statue overlooked Alabama

From 1946 until 1998, Alabama's famous state of Vulcan, the god of the forge, held a traffic beacon rather than his spear. The light would change to red to indicate traffic fatalities on Birmingham's roadways.

Anyone who drove on Interstate 65 through Birmingham between 1946 and 1998 didn’t see the same Vulcan statue we now see rising above the Magic City.
