Former sergeant leads Walker County sheriff’s race to replace ousted Nick Smith

Jason Akins, a former Sheriff’s sergeant and local businessman is currently leading his opponent in a race for Walker County Sheriff following the defeat of former Sheriff Nick Smith last month. Smith’s defeat at the polls came after a federal investigation, 25 indictments and numerous guilty pleas following a 2023 inmate death.
