JAŸ-Z and Rick Rubin Take Over The Met for the World Premiere of HBO’s JAŸ-Z In 8

Thirty years after Reasonable Doubt introduced the world to one of hip-hop’s most consequential voices, JAŸ-Z is opening the door to his creative process in a way audiences have rarely seen.

On Sunday, September 13, JAŸ-Z joined legendary producer Rick Rubin at New York City’s Metropolitan Opera House at Lincoln Center for the world premiere of HBO’s new eight-part documentary series, JAŸ-Z In 8. The project arrives on HBO and HBO Max Friday, September 18, bringing together two figures whose careers have helped shape the sound and direction of modern music.

The premiere itself reflected the magnitude of the moment. Leonardo DiCaprio, SZA, Daniel Kaluuya, DJ Khaled, Fat Joe, Gunna, Questlove, Yo Gotti, Winnie Harlow, Lindsey Vonn, Jerrod Carmichael, Charlamagne tha God, Slick Rick, DJ D-Nice, Angie Martinez, Steve Stoute, Ebro Darden, Angela Rye and a lengthy list of artists, executives, athletes and cultural tastemakers filled The Met for an early look at the highly anticipated series.

But beyond the celebrity arrivals, JAŸ-Z In 8 is ultimately centered on something far more personal: the relationship between the man, the music and the experiences that informed both.

Built around a candid conversation between JAŸ-Z and Rubin, the documentary revisits defining chapters from the rapper and entrepreneur’s career while unpacking how he approaches writing, storytelling and artistic evolution. Rather than simply retracing career milestones, the series digs into the people, neighborhoods, decisions and pivotal moments that ultimately found their way into the music.

That makes the timing especially fitting. Three decades removed from Reasonable Doubt, JAŸ-Z’s catalog continues to live well beyond nostalgia. The Blueprint, now 25 years old, remains a cultural reference point and recently climbed to No. 1 on Apple Music’s Hip-Hop/Rap Albums chart, another reminder of how deeply his body of work remains embedded in contemporary hip-hop.

Across the eight episodes, viewers will hear JAŸ-Z revisit songs spanning multiple eras of his catalog, including “Brooklyn’s Finest,” “Can I Live,” “Where I’m From,” “99 Problems,” “No Church in the Wild,” “The Story of O.J.,” “Family Feud,” “4:44” and “Legacy.” In context, the records become more than a soundtrack to his career. They function as entry points into conversations about ambition, survival, family, identity, success and the evolution of his perspective over time.

For Rubin, the series also marks a notable first. The influential producer makes his documentary directorial debut with JAŸ-Z In 8, extending a creative relationship with JAŸ-Z that has already produced one of the rapper’s most recognizable records in “99 Problems.” Their familiarity gives the project room to feel less like a conventional retrospective and more like an extended conversation between two artists examining how great work gets made — and what it means after the world has lived with it for decades.

Following the premiere screening, guests continued the celebration at an after-party on Lincoln Center Plaza, where D’USSÉ cocktails were served throughout the evening.

Executive produced by JAŸ-Z, Daniel Kaluuya and Rick Rubin, with Leila Mattimore and David Rohde serving as producers, JAŸ-Z In 8 adds another chapter to the ongoing documentation of hip-hop history while allowing one of its most closely analyzed figures to narrate more of that history himself.

JAŸ-Z In 8 premieres Friday, September 18 at 8 p.m. ET/PT on HBO. The first two episodes will debut back-to-back and become available simultaneously on HBO Max, with two new episodes arriving each Friday through October 9.
