Henderson/Getty Images) | Getty Images Jimmy Garoppolo could choose to retire this year rather than return for a third season as the Rams backup quarterback, according to Ian Rapoport. If the Rams were dragging their heels to make a decision about the backup quarterback position because they had been assuming Garoppolo would re-sign, L.A. could be left scrambling for an option behind Matthew Stafford with few suitable players remaining.
This is unless the team really does want to get Ty Simpson in the draft this week, and Garoppolo knows it so he’s going to sit this out for a while until another opportunity arises.
The Rams most likely would not have room on the roster for both Garoppolo and Simpson. Even if they wanted Simpson to spend a year behind the scenes working on his game, perhaps Garoppolo doesn’t like the idea of being in a situation where he knows he’s not really wanted.
On the other hand, this could be unrelated and Garoppolo is just tired of being a football player without being able to play football.
Since joining the Rams, Garoppolo is 0-1 as a starter, that being a Week 18 game against the Seahawks in 2024 that had no meaning. The 34-year-old quarterback is losing hope of ever becoming a starter again and the signals from Sean McVay and Les Snead are that by now L.A. is looking to get younger after Stafford retires.
A lot younger than 34-35 at least.
Stetson Bennett is also on the roster, a fact that probably has no bearing on the Rams backup quarterback situation.
