The NCAA appears to be moving forward with an “age-based” eligibility proposal, which would limit athletes from playing more than four seasons or beyond their early 20s.
Under the proposal, which has been sent from the Division I Board of Directors to the Division I Cabinet, athletes would have five years to play five seasons beginning with their 19th birthday or high school graduation, whichever comes first. In addition, athletes could play five seasons within that five-year window, essentially doing away with redshirting. (The new rule would not apply to current athletes who are fourth-year seniors.)
