People keep moving away from Alabama’s largest county. Where are they going?

Alabama’s largest county is shrinking.

Since 2020, Jefferson County — home to 666,000 people, including those in Birmingham and many of its nearest suburbs — has lost 8,600 people, according to newly released population estimates from the U.S. Census Bureau.
