Amazon Web Services owns the Susquehanna AWS data center next to the Susquehanna Steam Electric Station, a nuclear power plant in Salem Township, Luzerne County. Talen Energy sold the data center to Amazon in 2024 and has agreed to provide up to 1.92 gigawatts of power to Amazon through 2042. Two data center buildings are operational and more are under construction at the site. Seen on Sept. 2, 2026.

A developer comes to town promising billions of dollars in investment, hundreds of jobs and a chance to be part of the artificial intelligence economy. But the project also comes with questions: How much electricity will it use? How much land will it take? How much should taxpayers give up in incentives?
