A new event, inspired by the Met Gala, is coming to Birmingham to celebrate local trailblazers, support emerging leaders and uplift the community.
The Steel City Legacy Gala, set for July 18 at WorkPlay, will recognize more than 40 individuals for excellence in business, media, fashion, leadership, and community service.
“The Steel City Legacy Gala is about giving people their flowers while they can still smell them,” said founder Kyla Carr. “Every person we honor represents true impact within our communities.”
Each honoree has dedicated more than 10 years of service to Birmingham and its surrounding areas. Confirmed honorees include the following:
Honorees include Angelica Melendez, Dee Reed, Mayor James Stewart Jr., LaTonya Tate and Danny Carr.- Angelica Melendez, program manager for the Hispanic and Immigrant Center of Alabama (HICA)
- Dee Reed, Black Voters Matter Organizing Manager
- Irondale Mayor James Stewart Jr.
- Birmingham City Councilor LaTonya Tate
- Jefferson County District Attorney Danny Carr
Additionally, the Steel City Legacy Gala committee will distribute more than $40,000 in academic scholarships and small business grants.
The event is inspired by the Met Gala, an annual, highly exclusive fundraising gala held at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City that brings out top celebrities in head-turning couture.
The Steel City Legacy Gala will feature fashion, entertainment, silent auctions, luxury raffles, scholarship and grant giveaways and celebrity guests.
The event will be hosted by local content creator LaDarrius “LHUT” Hutcherson and will feature musical artists Pynk Beard and Lillian Aleece as special guests.
