The Pittsburgh Steelers will look much different on the sideline than fans have grown custom to. Along with Mike McCarthy taking over for Mike Tomlin, new coordinators are in place, as well.

New defensive coordinator Patrick Graham joined the Steelers’ staff after holding the same role with the Las Vegas Raiders. Graham spoke with the media on Friday and was asked about the role of Jalen Ramsey.

“[He’s] definitely a chess piece,“ Graham said via Chris Carter. ”But you’re asking me a question in April. He’s a good football player who happens to be a defensive back. Jalen does a lot of things well. I love what I hear about his leadership.“

Graham added that they want to be “multiple” as players, but didn’t commit to Ramsey being a cornerback or safety.

Ramsey played 419 snaps at free safety in 2025, per PFF. He also played 353 snaps in the slot and 157 snaps in the box. Surprisingly, the Pro Bowler played just 157 snaps o the boundary.

Pittsburgh re-signed Asante Samuel Jr. to go along with Ramsey and Joey Porter Jr, and Brandin Echols in the secondary.
