Houston has never needed permission to shape the sound of Hip Hop. From the chopped and screwed movement pioneered by DJ Screw to the street-level storytelling that helped define Southern rap, the city has built a music identity that continues to influence generations.
Now, Carl Crawford and his 1501 Certified Entertainment have added another layer to that legacy with Studio 1501, a high-end recording complex created to give Houston artists a world-class creative home without having to leave the city.
Built in partnership with studio partner Jarrod “Lacemode” Lacy, the new space reflects Crawford’s long-standing push to develop and elevate the next wave of talent. The studio has been completed with the installation of Augspurger Duo12V monitors and Sub212s, bringing a luxury-level listening environment to a city already rich with creative firepower.
A High-End Creative Home For Houston Artists

Since 2016, 1501 Certified Entertainment has been a visible force in Houston’s modern music story, helping spotlight rising female rap talent including Megan Thee Stallion, Erica Banks and Diamond the Body. With Studio 1501, the label is extending that artist-development mission into the physical recording space.
The idea is simple but powerful. If Houston artists are expected to compete globally, they deserve access to the kind of environment that reflects that ambition.
The 1501 brand has always been about going big,” Lacy said. “We want these artists to feel like they can have a command of what they do and elevate the expectations of what they can accomplish in the world.
For Crawford, the studio fills a gap in the city’s creative infrastructure.
There simply has not been a space of this caliber in the city attached to a label like ours,” Crawford said. “It was important that Houston have a hometown spot that can compete on that level and also offer artists a real creative home in their own backyards.
Inside The Rolls Royce Room
Studio 1501 was designed and built over two years, with Crawford investing heavily in both the look and sound of the complex. The control room has been informally dubbed “The Rolls-Royce Room,” a nod to its Italian leather seating and high-end details.
But the space was not built for appearance alone. According to Lacy, the purpose was to create a room that immediately communicates scale, quality, and seriousness to every artist who walks in.
“Carl has built a place of magnitude with this that is really designed to make an impression, both sonically and vibe-wise,” Lacy said. “We want people to know that whether they are local or visiting talent, they are getting the best of the best.”
That commitment led Crawford and Lacy to Augspurger, a company known for outfitting major recording facilities with powerful, accurate monitor systems.
“When Carl came to me to build this place and asked what the best speakers to outfit the room with were, there was no question that they had to be Augspurger,” Lacy said.
Sound Built For Hip Hop Impact
For a label working in Hip Hop, especially the kind of club-driven and bass-heavy music that can move from studio sessions to nightlife spaces, translation matters. The mix has to hit in the room, in the car, and in the club.
That made the Augspurger Duo12V monitors and Sub212s a critical part of Studio 1501’s identity.
“In Hip Hop music, specifically the style 1501 specializes in, it’s incredibly important that you feel the music in the mix like you would in a club,” Lacy said. “With the Augspurgers, there is no guesswork with that. They can handle that broad range of frequencies at any volume level, and when you do turn it up, that 808 hits you exactly where it should.”
For Crawford, that confidence also connects directly to how music moves in the marketplace.
“Carl markets his music in clubs, so we know he can confidently walk in there and say ‘Play this!’ and it’s going to have that same impact,” Lacy said.
A Custom Room With A Personal Touch
The installation was not a plug-and-play upgrade. Augspurger founder and President Dave Malekpour, along with the Malekpour Design Partners team, helped tune the room for a tailored listening experience.
That attention to placement, speaker angle, and sweet spot precision helped shape a control room designed for the needs of Crawford, Lacy, and the artists who will record there.
“We have some of the best gear that you can get in here, and we want a sound system that translates all of that on an epic scale,” Lacy said. “Dave and the MDP Team were very involved in the final placement and angles of the speakers to ensure everything was perfect and the sweet spots were very dialed in.”
Lacy said that the level of personal involvement made the room feel even more distinct.
You don’t get that personalized approach with other companies, and it was an aspect that makes the studio that much more special for our artists.
Raising The Standard For The Next Wave
Studio 1501 arrives at a moment when Houston continues to generate new talent, new personalities, and new energy within Hip Hop. For Crawford and Lacy, the studio is not just a room. It is part of a broader platform meant to help artists sharpen their sound, build confidence, and see themselves at a higher level.
“It changes the whole aura of the room for a performer,” Crawford said. “You can tell it gives them a good feeling being in here and making music.”
That feeling matters. Artists often rise to the level of the rooms they are given access to. Studio 1501 was built to make sure Houston talent does not have to compromise.
“We now have a home base where these artists can stay in the city and do their best work at a truly luxury level,” Crawford said. “Augspurger has really put the Midas Touch on this room, and we can’t wait to show the world what it’s capable of.”
Houston’s Sound Gets A Luxury Upgrade
Studio 1501 represents a clear investment in Houston’s next chapter. It brings together label infrastructure, premium audio design, artist development, and a city with one of the strongest cultural footprints in Hip Hop.
For 1501 Certified Entertainment, the studio gives the label a physical anchor for its future. For Houston artists, it offers a luxury-level room built to help them create records that can compete anywhere.
And for a city that has always known how to make the world listen, Studio 1501 gives that sound another place to grow.
