Sundance 2027 Begins a New Chapter in Boulder With a Reimagined Festival Experience

3 hours ago 2

The Sundance Film Festival is heading into a new era.

From January 21–31, 2027, filmmakers, industry leaders, critics and film lovers from around the world will descend on Boulder, Colorado, for the first Sundance Film Festival held in its new home — marking a major shift for an institution that has helped shape independent cinema for more than four decades.

While the location is changing, Sundance says its foundation remains firmly rooted in the vision of founder Robert Redford: championing artists, introducing bold independent stories to audiences and creating community through film.

The 2027 festival will officially open January 21, with world premieres running through January 26. Additional screenings will continue throughout the festival, while Sundance’s annual fundraising gala is scheduled for January 22. Audiences outside Colorado will also have access to select films through the festival’s online program from January 28–31, with virtual access for press and industry beginning January 27.

A More Walkable Sundance

One of the most noticeable changes is the festival’s newly concentrated footprint.

Rather than requiring audiences to move across a sprawling destination, many of Sundance’s Boulder venues will sit within approximately a two-mile radius, creating what could become a significantly more walkable and connected festival experience.

Programming will stretch across venues including the University of Colorado Boulder’s Macky Auditorium, Roe Green Theatre and Muenzinger Auditorium, along with Boulder High School, Boulder Theater, eTown Hall, Canyon Theater, Chautauqua Auditorium and Dairy Arts Center. The historic Hotel Boulderado will serve as Festival Headquarters, while Cinemark Century will become a central screening destination for press and industry.

The geography also places Sundance within close proximity to one of Boulder’s most recognizable cultural corridors, Pearl Street, where restaurants, retail and gathering spaces could create a natural extension of the festival beyond the theater walls.

For filmmakers, media and attendees accustomed to building entire schedules around screenings, interviews, panels, dinners and networking events, that accessibility may prove to be one of the most consequential changes of Sundance’s move.

More Films, More Voices

Sundance isn’t simply relocating. It’s expanding.

The festival’s four primary competition categories — U.S. Dramatic, World Cinema Dramatic, U.S. Documentary and World Cinema Documentary — will each grow to 12 films in 2027. Other sections including Premieres, NEXT, Midnight and Family Matinee are also set to expand.

That means more opportunities for independent filmmakers to place their work before the audiences, distributors, journalists and industry decision-makers who have long made Sundance one of the most influential launching pads in entertainment.

Sundance is also broadening its programming beyond traditional screenings. Its Offscreen slate — formerly known as Beyond Film — will expand signature programming such as Cinema Café, The Big Conversation and Power of Story, while incorporating live podcast recordings and additional conversations with artists and creative leaders.

New Frontier Returns

Another significant development for 2027 is the return of New Frontier, Sundance’s experimental program exploring the intersection of storytelling, art and emerging technology.

After a two-year pause, the program will return as Sundance continues examining how evolving technology and media are reshaping creative expression. Historically positioned as one of the festival’s most forward-thinking platforms, New Frontier has served artists working outside traditional cinematic formats and will now become part of Sundance’s new Boulder identity.

Its return comes at a particularly important moment as filmmakers and audiences wrestle with rapid changes in artificial intelligence, digital media, immersive storytelling and the broader relationship between technology and culture.

Sundance Goes Even More Global

The 2027 festival will also introduce major changes to its awards landscape.

For the first time, the International Federation of Film Critics, or FIPRESCI, will participate in Sundance with its own jury, recognizing debut filmmakers within the World Cinema Dramatic and World Cinema Documentary competitions.

Perhaps even more significant for international filmmakers, Sundance has now been recognized by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences as an Academy Awards–qualifying festival for World Cinema Grand Jury Prize winners in the dramatic and documentary categories.

Those winners will automatically qualify for consideration for the upcoming Academy Awards in the International Feature Film category, creating an even stronger bridge between Sundance discovery and Hollywood’s biggest stage.

Festival jury and audience awards will be announced January 29.

Boulder Becomes Part of the Story

Sundance’s relocation will inevitably change the rhythm and culture surrounding the festival.

Boulder brings its own personality — a mix of arts, outdoor culture, restaurants, local businesses, university energy and mountain scenery. Sundance says more than 100 dining options can be found in the heart of Boulder alone, with roughly 400 throughout the city, while regional transit will connect festivalgoers with Denver and Denver International Airport.

More than 2,000 volunteers are also expected to help bring the 2027 festival to life.

It all sets the stage for something bigger than a venue change.

For generations of filmmakers, Sundance has represented discovery: the possibility that an unknown director, unexpected performance or unconventional story could arrive in January and leave as one of the year’s most talked-about cultural moments.

Now the festival itself is embracing that same spirit of reinvention.

Boulder will have the opportunity to shape what Sundance becomes next, while Sundance brings decades of cinematic history into a city experiencing the festival for the first time.

Passes and ticket packages are expected to go on sale in October 2026, with single-film tickets arriving in early January and the official 2027 Sundance lineup scheduled to be revealed in December.

Come January, the industry’s attention will turn toward Colorado.

New city. Expanded program. New voices.

Same Sundance mission — and potentially an entirely new festival era.
