There have been a few pleasant side effects of the Packers not having a first round pick this year. One was getting to watch Micah Parsons in a Packers uniform, and we’ll get to enjoy that again this fall, whenever he returns from his torn ACL.
But another is better draft coverage. People covering the Packers can’t just track mock drafts and throw darts at first round prospects, saying “hey, maybe it could be this guy?” To have any kind of meaningful content, people who may not normally have dug super deep into draft coverage have had to learn all about Day 2 and Day 3 prospects, giving fans a better look at the draft overall.
Even if prospects in later rounds have a lower hit rate, Packers fans should know as well as anyone how important those picks can be. Just look at the Packers’ offensive line the last couple of years: Rasheed Walker, Zach Tom, and Sean Rhyan have all played significant roles, and none was higher than a third round pick. To say most were fairly lightly regarded might be an understatement.
It’s fair to wonder if we’re actually getting to know the right prospects, but that’s no different a question than what NFL teams are trying to answer right now. All we can say as fans is that it’s good to have more information, and the lack of a first rounder has forced people writing about the team to give it to us.
