With College Football Playoff expansion on the horizon, the NCAA is taking steps to standardize the start date of each season.
The Division I FBS Oversight Committee on Thursday recommended a proposal that would essentially turn what is now “Week 0” into Week 1, thereby giving teams 14 weeks in which to play 12 games each season. Under the current setup, teams can apply for an exception to play during Week 0 — typically the last or next-to-last weekend in August, while all other begin their season on Labor Day weekend.
