Like any community, Alabama has three sectors to provide for our human needs: government, business, and nonprofit organizations. Defense and crime protection are usually the responsibility of government. Providing everyday goods and services is usually the responsibility of business. Nonprofit philanthropic organizations, sometimes called the “Third Sector,” exist to meet the needs of vulnerable populations not met by government or business, as well as to support all of our expressions of faith, values, political goals, and the arts. The sectors do not act independently.
